ABOUT US

How Stick It To Sarcoma was born…

In February of 2007, one of our best friends, Jillian Bentley, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Synovial Sarcoma. She had chemotherapy and radiation treatments until June 2007.  By the time September rolled around, she was in remission.  But in March of 2009, the cancer had returned and she would have to undergo chemotherapy treatments again. This round, Jillian began a CaringBridge site in order to journal about her experience.  (To read about her story and her CaringBridge site, please visit Jillian’s Story)  It wasn’t until she had made a journal entry about the lack of funding for sarcoma research, that really inspired us.  One of our first ideas was to create t-shirts to sell.  We brainstormed for project names and finally Jenny had the creative idea of Stick It To Sarcoma.  We both agreed that Stick It To Sarcoma fit our attitude toward sarcoma perfectly, so we adopted it as our name.

Why we do this…

We not only do this in honor of Jillian, but for all of the sarcoma patients, survivors and families that are fighting this battle.  We find it unfair and extremely disheartening that sarcoma is referred to as “the forgotten cancer.”  Even if it’s small, we want to make an impact and contribute to sarcoma research whether it be through monetary donations or by raising awareness.

THE OWL

Our mascot…

We adopted an owl as our logo to represent our inspiration, Jillian.  She cherished owls and held them at higher value than most people did.  The pink represents Jill's favorite color and the yellow is the color for sarcoma awareness.  We wanted an owl that is more youthful appearance because Jillian had such a fun loving personality.
